Lieutenant-Colonel (doctor) Ricardo Navarro Suay, currently posted to the Medical Section (JMED) of the Operations Command (MOPS), has been appointed an honorary corresponding member of the Royal National Academy of Medicine of Spain (RANME).

The doctor lieutenant-colonel emphasises that, for him, receiving this title reaffirms the need to “cover all bases” and to understand his professional career from a multidisciplinary perspective. “I believe that a medical officer must strive for excellence in all the professional fields that concern us: clinical care, logistics and operations, teaching, research and management, in order to pass on the legacy of knowledge to the next generation of military doctors. We must not forget that we have all taken that oath,” says the doctor lieutenant-colonel.

The career of the Lieutenant-Colonel (doctor), a specialist in Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation, combines medicine, teaching, research and international military experience. He has taken part in 15 overseas missions under the mandate of NATO, the European Union and the United Nations, in locations such as Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Haiti, Lebanon, the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean and the Baltic. As a flight surgeon, he carried out 42 medical rescue missions in Afghanistan, evacuating 46 casualties.

In the field of science, he has authored 188 articles, 7 books and 54 book chapters. He has also supervised 11 doctoral theses and received numerous honours, including the ‘Fidel Pagés Miravé’, ‘Comandante Médico Pagés Miravé’, ‘General Darías Montesinos’ and ‘Revista Sanidad Militar’ awards.
