During the exercise, the theoretical knowledge acquired by the Spanish inspectors and US escorts regarding the Vienna Document (VD11) was put into practice
A national team comprising three members of the Spanish Verification Unit (UVE), together with an escort team comprising personnel from the US Defence Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), has carried out this VERIFEX-type assessment exercise, which took place in Germany at Grafenwöhr, the base of the 41st Field Artillery Brigade (FAB), a US unit deployed in Germany and therefore subject to the Vienna Document 2011 (DV11).
During the exercise, the theoretical knowledge acquired by the Spanish inspectors and US escorts under the Vienna Document (VD11) was put into practice.
The Spanish inspectors had the opportunity to visit and inspect all the equipment subject to and restricted by treaty at the 41st FAB – in this case, solely the M270A2 MLRS multiple rocket launcher – as well as the facilities and activities carried out at this unit, and expressed their gratitude for the organisation and preparation of the visit.
This practice serves to harmonise operational standards across OSCE countries and optimises the training of inspectors, escorts and interpreters.
All staff and Verification Units involved in the exercise have actively participated and cooperated in both its preparation and its conduct, thereby demonstrating their level of preparedness and enabling a review of the current procedures in place, so that, should the Kingdom of Spain carry out an actual active assessment in any of the countries or Units subject to DV11, it can be implemented swiftly and effectively.
