Se More than 750 Lebanese military personnel have been trained in mine action, unexploded ordnance and improvised explosive devices
Soldiers from the 1st Engineers Regiment in Burgos, deployed in Al-Salhiyeh (Sidon), have completed the 30th edition of the Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices (C-IED) Awareness course, delivered to members of the Lebanese Armed Forces.
With the conclusion of this course, the Spanish Mobile Training Team (MTT) has now trained more than 750 Lebanese military personnel in mine action, unexploded ordnance and improvised explosive device capabilities.
Now that this training has been completed, the Spanish team is continuing to deliver training aimed at improving the Lebanese units’ preparedness to deal with the threat posed by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and unexploded ordnance (UXO), which are among the main threats to the region’s security and stability.
In addition to the C-IED awareness courses, the team runs another training programme specifically aimed at personnel from the Lebanese Armed Forces’ Corps of Engineers, which, in addition to the above, focuses on other procedures specific to sappers. These activities help to enhance their technical and operational capabilities, thereby promoting their autonomy and readiness to deal with any risk.
This training mission is being carried out at the Al-Salhiyeh military base, where the Spanish team is deployed alongside the French Operational Military Cooperation Detachment (DPMO, by its French acronym). From this location, Spain is actively involved in strengthening the capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), with the Spanish team responsible for training in the field of sappers.
Furthermore, ongoing coordination with the French detachment makes it possible to offer a comprehensive training programme that combines different military capabilities, contributing to the professional development of the Lebanese Armed Forces and the strengthening of the country’s security institutions. The joint work between the two teams serves as an example of international cooperation aimed at improving stability and security in southern Lebanon.
Spanish training of the Lebanese Armed Forces
These training activities are carried out within the framework of the Military Technical Committee for Lebanon (MTC4L), which was established in March 2024 and comprises a group of countries — including Spain — whose main objective is to coordinate their efforts to enhance the efficiency and operational capability of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF).
