Navy Sergeant Alejandra Vicens wins the world title alongside Paula González, embodying the values that inspire the Joint Cyberspace Command

The Joint Cyberspace Command (MCCE) celebrates the international success achieved by Navy Sergeant Alejandra Vicens, who is posted to this unit, after being crowned world champion in the Vaurien class alongside her teammate Paula González Esteban, from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, during the World Championship held between 18 and 24 July in Travemünde (Germany).

The championship brought together 62 boats from countries including Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Poland, the Netherlands, Angola and the United States, establishing itself as one of the most demanding competitions on the international calendar for this class of dinghy sailing.

The competition was characterised by particularly challenging conditions right from the first day, with gusts of wind exceeding 25 knots, forcing around thirty boats to withdraw. However, the Spanish pair completed all the scheduled races, remaining amongst the top contenders in the overall standings from the outset and leading the women’s category until they were crowned champions.

Assigned to the Joint Cyberspace Command and sailing under the pennant of the Navy Regatta Commission, Sergeant Vicens exemplifies how the values that inspire the MCCE’s day-to-day work are also reflected outside the operational sphere. The unit’s motto, ‘Loyalty and perseverance, ingenuity and skill’, encapsulates the principles that guide the mission to protect cyberspace in support of the Armed Forces, but also defines the qualities needed to successfully tackle challenges of a very different nature.

Technical preparation, the ability to adapt to changing situations, coordination with one’s crew-mate, decision-making under pressure and the perseverance required to achieve a common goal are values shared by both high-level sporting competition and the professional performance of the members of the MCCE.

This new world title represents not only a remarkable sporting achievement for the Navy and for Spanish sailing, but also a source of pride for the Joint Cyberspace Command, which sees Sergeant Alejandra Vicens’s career as an example of the commitment, excellence and spirit of self-improvement that characterise its men and women, both in the fulfilment of their mission and in the challenges they face beyond their military service.
