The inspection was carried out in the field of small arms and light weapons and conventional ammunition
A Spanish delegation, comprising three members of the Spanish Verification Unit and a specialist in explosives and ammunition from Logistics Group No. 21 (ALOG 21), has carried out a fact-finding visit to the Republic of Guatemala.
The visit forms part of the existing bilateral cooperation programmes between Guatemala and Spain, which are aimed at strengthening security, development and mutual cooperation in the field of small arms and light weapons and conventional ammunition (SALW-CA).
During the mission, the Spanish delegation undertook a packed programme of activities and fact-finding visits to various facilities and institutions of the Guatemalan Armed Forces. In the Guatemala City area, the tour included the ‘Mariscal Zavala’ Military Brigade, the Humanitarian and Rescue Brigade, the First Military Police Brigade ‘Guardia de Honor’, the Guatemalan Army Corps of Engineers, the facilities of the War Material Service, and the headquarters of the Directorate-General for Defence Policy at the Ministry of National Defence, where the final meeting took place and the conclusions of the visit were discussed.
The itinerary also included visits to San Juan Sacatepéquez to visit the Second Military Police Brigade ‘GDHAGM’ and the Polytechnic School.
At the institutional level, the delegation visited the Spanish Embassy in Guatemala City, where it attended a meeting and reception with the Ambassador. During the event, the areas of cooperation between the two countries were discussed.
As a result of this visit, it has been agreed that a series of workshops and a training course will be held in the second half of 2026, with the aim of improving the Guatemalan Armed Forces’ capabilities in the management of explosives and conventional ammunition.
The Spanish Verification Unit is responsible for ensuring compliance with the international treaties and agreements on conventional arms control signed by Spain, as well as for participating in cooperation and technical verification programmes relating to small arms and light weapons and conventional ammunition, with a view to contributing to international development, peace and stability.
