Engineer Regiment No. 1, based in Burgos, has deployed to Lebanon for the third time with a clear strategic objective: to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in the field of security and defence.

To this end, a Mobile Training Team (MTT) has deployed to the Engineer Regiment in Beirut. Over a four-week period, Spanish instructors will deliver a course to 20 Lebanese military personnel, focused on in-depth knowledge of explosives, ammunition and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

The programme combines theory with intensive practical instruction in essential techniques for detection, marking, investigation and clearance of threats. This training is crucial for LAF units operating in high-risk environments, where the presence of unexploded ordnance and mines is constant.

This cooperation, highly valued by the Lebanese personnel, not only enhances the protection and safety standards of their own troops on the ground, but also reinforces Spain’s commitment to stability and peace in the region.

Spanish training of the Lebanese Armed Forces

These training activities are carried out within the framework of the Military Technical Committee for Lebanon (MTC4L), which was established in March 2024 and is composed of a group of countries — including Spain — whose main objective is to coordinate their efforts to increase the efficiency and operational capability of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF).

These efforts take shape through the organisation of several working groups on different areas, such as infrastructure, civil-military cooperation and operational and tactical training. Among the objectives pursued is the recruitment and training of new Lebanese soldiers, subject to financial resources, infrastructure and recruitment levels. Of these, it is intended that around 1,500 will deploy south of the Litani River — the area of operations of the United Nations mission, UNIFIL — in order to ensure State presence and the security of the population.
