The head of the Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies (IEEE), Brigadier General Víctor Bados, today closed the 2nd Geopolitical Conference ‘The International Order in Transition’, which took place at the Royal Site of San Ildefonso (Segovia).
General Bados highlighted the success of this second edition and emphasised that the aim of these conferences is to strengthen the culture of defence, so that there is greater social awareness of the importance of security in today’s world.
In this regard, the director of the IEEE stated that the organisation of such forums is a duty, as they enable a strategic analysis of issues related to geopolitics, security, defence and international relations. The world is fragmented and the reality is highly volatile; therefore, security is paramount, and we need to reflect and think strategically about current challenges, risks and threats.
The conference brought together around 90 analysts from a wide range of fields, who discussed energy security, international law and order, competition between powers, the evolution of international alliances, European strategic autonomy and the global impact of interconnected conflicts.
Among the speakers at the conference, the special session on Europe and international security was particularly noteworthy, featuring NATO’s Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood, Javier Colomina; the former High Representative and Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell; and Spain’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ana Palacio.
This conference forms part of the activities promoted by CESEDEN, through the IEEE, aimed at the analysis, reflection and dissemination of knowledge on the main challenges of the international strategic environment.
