Commemorative events for ‘Armed Forces Day 2026’ begin in Vigo

  • The naval display and the static exhibition of equipment have already been opened in the Port of Vigo. Both will be open to visitors until Sunday 31 May

The raising of the national flag on Rúa Montero Ríos at 10:00 am, presided over by General Marcial González Prada, Head of the Manoeuvre Support Command, and accompanied by the Mayor of Vigo, Abel Ramón Caballero Álvarez, was the first event in the celebrations that will take place in the town until next Sunday 31st.

The Honour Guard of the 29th Infantry Regiment (RI29) and a squad of sappers took part in the flag-raising. The flag-raising team was made up of personnel from the RI29. Two of its members wore period uniforms of the ‘Isabel la Católica’ Regiment.

The BRILAT Military Band, the music unit of the Manoeuvre Support Command (MAM), also took part. The BRILAT falconer was in attendance.

Following this ceremony, General González de Prada, accompanied by the Mayor of Vigo and the President of the Vigo Port Authority, Carlos Botana Lagarón, inaugurated the static exhibition of equipment set up on Avenida da Beira-Mar. Here, the three branches of the Armed Forces, the Military Emergency Unit, the Joint Cyber Command and the Guardia Civil are displaying equipment and operational gear. They have also organised activities and demonstrations, as well as several interactive zones such as a climbing wall, a children’s mine-clearing area, and electric cars and motorbikes. This exhibition will remain open until Sunday 31st at 2 pm.

Subsequently, military and civilian authorities have moved to the port area of Vigo, where the Navy ships are moored and can be visited during the open-day hours until next Sunday. These vessels are the aircraft carrier ‘Juan Carlos I’, the frigates ‘Reina Sofia’, ‘Blas de Lezo’ and ‘Almirante Juan de Borbón’, the Amphibious Ship ‘Castilla’ and the hydrographic vessel ‘

Hundreds of people attended both events, including pupils from various schools in Vigo.
