  •  The presence of Spanish-led NATO naval forces in the Baltic Sea allows for interaction with Germany in realistic simulated scenarios

The NATO Allied Reaction Force (ARF) Maritime Component Command (MCC), led by Spain, has supported German units in the conduct of exercise Northern Quadriga 26.

The aim of this training activity has been to reinforce presence in the North Sea and in the coastal waters of northern Germany, as well as to further develop Germany’s national defence capabilities and the Alliance’s collective defence.

Through exercises of this kind, naval units train to protect critical underwater domains, including subsea cables, energy infrastructure and strategic maritime routes. In doing so, they contribute to global stability and to the economic prosperity of Allied nations by safeguarding sea lines of communication and free trade.

This exercise took place following NATO’s demonstration of its ability to deploy the Allied Reaction Force (ARF) to Baltic Sea waters during exercise Steadfast Dart 26. Taking advantage of the presence of the Maritime Component Command (MCC) in the area, naval units were subsequently integrated into exercise Northern Quadriga, led by the German Armed Forces.

This NATO naval deployment, both during the Steadfast Dart 26 phase and throughout exercise Northern Quadriga 26, provides an opportunity to enhance the level of training and foster interoperability, while strengthening cohesion among Allies. All of this contributes to increasing the deterrence and defence capabilities of the Atlantic Alliance, as these are key elements in ensuring that forces are prepared, ready and trained to act when and where necessary in the event of a crisis or contingency.
