  • Representatives from the Centre belonging to the Joint Cyber Command have emphasized the role of AI in enhancing cyber defence capabilities

The Artificial Intelligence Reference Centre of the Defence Staff (CRIA, for its Spanish acronym), part of the Joint Cyber Command, has taken part in the Third Summit on Responsible Artificial Intelligence in the Military Field, held in A Coruña.

Representatives of CRIA have emphasised the use of AI as a multiplier of strategic capabilities in cyber defence, as well as its fundamental role in providing an immediate response to cyber-attacks. They stressed that AI must always be subject to human control and ethical criteria of responsibility. Similarly, they have addressed the challenges posed by our enemies' use of AI, highlighting the key trends that will influence its development and impact on future security.

During the summit, experts from all participating organizations agreed that the development of military AI should be viewed as part of a broader collaborative framework, rather than an isolated process.

The speakers emphasised the need for constant collaboration between the civil and military sectors, supported by academia and universities, to ensure innovation and continuous training.

There was consensus on the vital importance of training, with the human factor and specialised education being the pillars on which this technological transformation hinges.

Finally, with regard to sovereignty and strategic cooperation, they have advocated for the use of in-house infrastructure to safeguard classified information. However, they have insisted on the importance of sharing common evaluation standards and frameworks among allies to facilitate harmonised defence and effective interoperability on the international sphere.

Promoted by the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this initiative aims to provide a platform for states, international organisations, and experts from academia, industry, and civil society to exchange views on how AI in the military sphere can contribute to strengthening international peace and security.
