The Spanish Verification Unit participates in an inspection in Moldova

August 27, 2025
  • A team led by two members of the Latvian Verification Unit has inspected the 1st and 2nd Moldovan motorised brigades

An inspector from the Spanish Verification Unit was part of the multinational team that carried out an area inspection in the Chisinau region, in eastern Moldova. The team was led by two members of the Latvian Verification Unit, and included an inspector from Albania.

After a day in the Latvian capital, Riga, where the objectives of the inspection were established and the tasks to be conducted by each inspector were outlined, the Inspection Team travelled to the city of Chisinau, to carry out a meeting for establishing an inspection programme.

Subsequently, the facilities of the 1st Motorised Brigade in Balti and the 2nd Motorised Brigade in Chisinau were visited and presentations about their capabilities were given. The inspection counted with the Moldovan Army complete transparency and cooperation.

The purpose of these inspections is to verify whether military activities subject to notification are being carried out in a given area and, if so, to observe the nature of these manoeuvres.

These types of inspections comply with the Vienna Document requirements, a key OSCE treaty containing confidence- and security-building measures (CSBMs). It has been signed by 56 states and requires signatories, among other measures, to exchange information annually on their military forces, to notify each other in advance of major military deployments or exercises, and to accept inspections of their military bases or a specified area of their territory.
