The Joint Cyberspace Command Establishes the 5G Cyber Defence Centre

  •  The Joint Cyberspace Command (MCCE) has launched the 5G Cyber Defence Centre to effectively combat cyberattacks.

This initiative arose in the aftermath of the COVID-19 crisis, during which the European Commission and the Council of Ministers approved the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) in June 2021.

Finally, in September 2022, an Interdepartmental Agreement was signed between the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation and the Ministry of Defence, enabling the development of 5G-related projects, which allowed the developement of the 5G Cyber Defence Centre and the development of supporting Artificial Intelligence tools.

On one hand, the Centre is dedicated to research aimed at enhancing cyber defence capabilities in military systems based on 5G networks, at both tactical and strategic levels. To this end, it is equipped with high-tech systems and nodes designed to train and educate Ministry of Defence personnel.

On the other hand, the Artificial Intelligence tools are specifically designed for the detection of cyberattacks in advanced environments, such as 5G bubbles with multiple nodes. Their goal is to identify threats in real time using AI, while reducing the need for human intervention to increase overall efficiency;  in other words, to automate processes.

The Spanish Armed Forces maintain a highly advanced technological level in both 5G and AI, providing operational capabilities aligned with the pace of emerging technologies. It is also worth highlighting that most successful cyberattacks are the result of human error. Therefore, raising awareness about cyber threats is essential, as each and every one of us represents the first line of defence against a cyberattack.
