After transiting the Indian Ocean and following several weeks of continuous sailing, the Spanish vessel has arrived in the Asian country to conduct logistical and diplomatic operations, and support activities for the national industry.

The frigate Méndez Núñez made a port call at Jakarta, Indonesia, where it had the opportunity to raise the Spanish ensign and strengthen ties with local authorities. Additionally, the vessel hosted the Spanish expatriate community in the area and provided support to the national industry by showcasing the ship’s advanced capabilities.

In this context, the frigate’s port activities attracted considerable interest and were supported by the presence of the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to the Republic of Indonesia, His Excellency Francisco de Asís Aguilera Aranda, who accompanied the crew throughout their stay during the various events held.

Among other activities, the vessel hosted a tour onboard for Indonesian military officials, culminating in a luncheon in the commander’s quarters. Additionally, a reception was held on deck, attended by the Special Advisor to the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Commodore Tony Herdijanto; and the British Minister for the House of Lords, Vernon Coaker; as well as various local and international civilian and military dignitaries.

The Méndez Núñez arrived at the port of Jakarta after 17 consecutive days at sea, following its departure from Salalah port (Oman). During this transit, the frigate demonstrated its interoperability capabilities with allied nations and was responsible, for a significant portion of the period, for the air defence of the task group. It has now resumed sailing, integrated within the British Carrier Strike Group (CSG) centred around the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales.

The Méndez Núñez frigate within the British Carrier Strike Group

At the end of April, the Spanish frigate joined the Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 25 of the British aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales. The Méndez Núñez frigate is now sailing towards Oceania, heading for its next port of call, alongside the rest of the vessels from partner and allied nations that form the British Royal Navy’s carrier strike group. In this way, the Spanish ship continues to showcase Spain’s technological autonomy and capabilities, as well as the power projection capacity of our Armed Forces in regions far from national territory.

Over the course of nine weeks at sea, the Méndez Núñez frigate has traversed the Atlantic and Mediterranean, participating in the ‘Highmast’ deployment alongside allied naval units. It has now arrived in the Indo-Pacific theatre, where it is slated to operate until around late August, after which it is scheduled to begin its homeward journey back to Spain.

Overall, participation in this Carrier Strike Group has represented both a logistical and operational challenge for the frigate Méndez Núñez and her crew. Above all, it constitutes a valuable opportunity to showcase Spain’s technological capability and autonomy, the power projection capacity of our Armed Forces across diverse geographical areas, and to reaffirm our commitment to maritime security and global stability.
