There are only four times per year when the rise of the flag is extraordinarily celebrated and it is nicknamed as the Solemn Rise of the flag. The first of this Solemn Rise is held on May 15th coinciding with the festivity of the Patron Saint of Madrid, San Isidrio. On this day, it is the major of Madrid who assists to the solemn rise. The second solemn rise of the flag is carried out on June 19th, commemorating the proclamation of his majesty the king and it is co-chaired by the President of the General Council of the Judiciary Power and the President of the Supreme Court. The third solemn rise takes place on July 12th which is the anniversary of the enactment of the Supreme Court and it is presided by the President of the Supreme Court. The last of the four solemn days is celebrated on December 6th, which the Spanish Constitution was approved. The rise of flag of this day is chaired both by the Presidents of the Congress and the Senate.

The flag measures 300 square meters (21x 14) and weighs 35 kilos. It was first risen in 2001, year when the previous pole (21 meters tall) was substituted by the new one (50 meters tall). This new pole has a turning device that allows to turn the pole in the same direction as the wind, avoiding the flag to get entangled around the pole. The pole weighs almost 20 tonnes and is anchored to a base that lies on four pillars located at the underground parking of Colon.
