Lieutenant General José Antonio Agüero Martínez, new commander of the Nato mission in Iraq, meets with the Secretary General of the Atlantic Alliance

• He will take over the mission from Italian General Giovanni M. Iannuci.

Lieutenant General Jose Antonio Agüero Martínez has been appointed Commander for the Atlantic Alliance Mission to Iraq, NATO Mission-Iraq (NMI). The new Head of Mission, who will replace General Giovanni M. Iannucci, met at NATO Headquarters in Brussels with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Also present at the meeting were Ambassador Federico Torres Muro, Permanent Representative to NATO, and the Spanish Military Representative to NATO and European Union Military Committees, Lieutenant General Francisco Javier Fernández Sánchez. The meeting focused on the general situation in Iraq and other territories in the region, future opportunities and challenges, the Alliance's commitment to the Iraqi people and the expansion of the mission to other areas.
