Retamares and Rota, Spain

  • Spanish and Portuguese military personnel test the interoperability of their respective deployable systems during the exercise

The "Federated Mission Networking (FMN) Verification, Validation and Confirmation" exercise (V2CN 23), led by the Joint Cyberspace Command (MCCE, in Spanish) and involving personnel and resources from the Spanish (Army, Navy, CIFAS and MCCE) and Portuguese (Estado-Maior-General das Forças Armadas), will run until 24 February.

The main purpose of the exercise is to certify the readiness of the FMN Forces that the Army and Navy place at the service of the Chief of Defence Staff (JEMAD, in Spanish), updating and standardising information exchange, and command and control capabilities. The FMN supports these capabilities and decision-making, enabling better situational awareness and facilitating rapid and effective deployment of these forces on any mission. It also improves their interoperability, resilience, and responsiveness.

Exercise V2CN is a unique opportunity to prepare for the demonstration of CIS capabilities for the purpose of NATO's planned Army and Navy engagements, which normally take place in exercises such as Steadfast Cobalt (STCO) andn Coalition Interoperability Warrior Exercise (CWIX)

In the current edition of V2CN, the participating nodes are deployed at the Retamares and Rota bases, interconnected through the Integrated Defence Information Infrastructure (I3D) and establishing a mission network (MN) in compliance with the new requirements and procedures for FMN networks to be deployed in NATO exercises and operations from 2025 onwards.
