Chief of Defence Staff (JEMAD), Admiral General Teodoro Esteban López Calderón, took part on a meeting last Tuesday with his counterparts in the NATO Military Committee in Brussels.
During the meeting, the Chiefs of Defence Staff discussed NATO 2030 agenda, aimed at ensuring that the Alliance is ready to face future challenges, an issue that will also be discussed at the meeting of heads of state and government next month also in Brussels.
The following day, the first non-virtual EU Military Committee this year, Chiefs of Defence Staff elected the current Austrian CHOD, general Robert Brieger, as the new chairman of the Military Committee, as of June 1, 2022.
The meeting was opened by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, who highlighted the importance of strategic autonomy and the defence initiatives of the European Union, in particular the role of EU combat groups to operate as quick reaction forces on emergency situations.
