Activities and events commemorating ‘Armed Forces Day 2024’ begin in Asturias

  • From today Wednesday and until next Sunday, among other activities, you will be able to visit the berthed ships at the port of ‘El Musel’

With the inauguration of the naval presence and the static exhibition of materials in the port of ‘El Musel’, the activities and events planned for the ‘Armed Forces Day 2024’ began in Gijón. Admiral Ignacio Frutos, Chief of the Ferrol Arsenal, accompanied by the Mayoress of Gijón, Carmen Moriyón, have been in charge of cutting the ribbon and pronouncing some words during the opening ceremony.

From this moment and until next Sunday, it will be possible to visit the berthed Navy ships at this port during the open doors timetable. Today it has already been possible to visit the frigate ‘Santa María’ and the ‘Intermares’ and tomorrow the aircraft carrier ‘Juan Carlos I’, the frigate ‘Blas de Lezo’, the amphibious assault ship ‘Galicia’ and the offshore patrol vessel ‘Atalaya’ are expected to arrive at El Musel.

In the port there is also a static exhibition of materials and vehicles of the three armies and the Guardia Civil, with the presence of two of their ships.

At midday, in Oviedo, the raising of the Spanish flag was held, an event which marked the start of the activities of this Armed Forces Week, which will culminate on Saturday 25 May with the land parade presided over by the King and Queen of Spain.

The raising of the flag in the ‘Plaza de la Escandalera’ was attended by a company from the Príncipe nº3 Regiment based at the ‘Cabo Noval’ barracks. Also taking part were the War Band of the Asturias 21 Regiment, a Gastador Squadron, and an Honours Company. The raising team was made up of personnel from the three armies and the Guardia Civil.

After the raising of the flag, the chief General of the Galicia VII Brigade, Alfonso Pardo de Santayana, the Mayor of Oviedo, Alfredo Cateli and the Government Delegate in Asturias, Delia Losa, inaugurated the static exhibition of material installed in the ‘Paseo del Bombé’, in which some 200 military personnel are taking part, including exhibition personnel and support personnel.
