Ukrainian Armed Forces Personnel Receive Training in Ronda

The Tercio “Alejandro de Farnesio” nº 4 of the Spanish Legion delivers two training modules for the first time since the beginning of the European Union Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine

The X Bandera “Millán Astray” Tercio “Alejandro de Farnesio” nº 4 of the Spanish Legion has hosted around seventy Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel at Montejaque Barracks, in Ronda, where they have received training in the Military Decision-Making Process (MDMP) and in Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) during the first quarter of 2026. This is the first time these training activities have been conducted at this location, as they were previously held in Almería.

The eleventh edition of the MDMP module, focused on planning at the tactical level, from small units up to brigade level, following a train-the-trainers approach, focuses on mission analysis, adversary assessment, organisation of resources and coordination of capabilities for the conduct of operations.

The second module, MOUT, is currently underway and is expected to conclude during the second week of March. Over a four-week period, it has sought to improve the capabilities of Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel in combat operations in urbanised areas. The training addresses procedures for movement and building clearing, as well as the coordination of small teams and operations in confined spaces.

Additionally, and given the nature of this type of operation, complementary training is also provided on the use of explosives, Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), and the employment of precision marksmen.

As a cross-cutting element, and given that the Spanish Legion is the Spanish Army’s reference unit in the employment of drones, their use has been integrated into the training activities. In this way, Ukraine’s requests have been addressed in order to provide more realistic training aligned with the current characteristics of the conflict.

As Lieutenant Colonel Carnero, commander of the X Bandera “Millán Astray”, noted, “the combat experience of the participating Ukrainian personnel has contributed to enriching the training activities through the exchange of knowledge and procedures of mutual interest.”

In addition to the eleven editions of the MDMP and MOUT modules, other courses concluded during February, such as the fourteenth Geospatial Analysis module (Vector Geospatial Data) and the twelfth Hawk surface-to-air missile operator course. This demonstrates Spain’s full commitment and contribution to strengthening the Ukrainian Armed Forces, enhancing their capacity to exercise sovereignty within their internationally recognised borders, as well as the trust Ukraine has placed in the Spanish Armed Forces to train its military personnel.

EUMAM Ukraine

The European Union Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) was established by Council Decision on 17 October 2022. Its objective is to strengthen the capacity of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend Ukraine’s territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders and to deter and respond to possible future military offensives by Russia and other potential aggressors.

EUMAM works closely with like-minded international partners to provide training support to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The mission is also open to the participation of third States. All mission activities are conducted on EU territory. To date, 24 EU Member States, including Spain, which plays a particularly significant role, have provided training modules and personnel for the training of Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel.

In Spain, training activities are directed by the Toledo Training Coordination Centre (TTCC), under the authority of the Operations Command. Activities are coordinates with different international structures, not only within the framework of the European Union but also through multinational arrangements. The centre consists of a Headquarters in Burgos, led by Brigadier General Francisco Javier Calero Perea, commander of the “Aragón” I Brigade. Under it fall the Toledo Combat Training Unit (UFC), a permanent structure responsible for both basic training and a range of specialised courses, and the Training Modules (TM), which are activated to deliver instruction in the requested specialties.

To date, within the framework of the EUMAM Ukraine mission, Spain has trained more than 8,700 Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel, and work continues in order to maintain this effort.
