Through these operational activities, the ship reinforces freedom of navigation within the framework of the EU Coordinated Maritime Presences in the Gulf of Guinea (CMP-GoG)
The Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) Furor (P-46), deployed as part of the European Union Coordinated Maritime Presences in the Gulf of Guinea (CMP-GoG), has conducted escort and protection operations for Spanish National Interest Vessels (NIV) during their transit through the waters of the Gulf of Guinea, thereby reinforcing the security of maritime supply routes and freedom of navigation in the region.
The latest activity of this kind focused on the protection of the oil tanker Montestena, a Spanish-owned vessel operated by the Basque shipping company Ibaizabal Tankers S.L. This tanker, with a deadweight of more than 159,000 tonnes and a length of 274 metres, regularly operates on strategic routes that support Spain’s national energy supply. Due to its operational and corporate links with Spain, it is designated as a National Interest Vessel (NIV), and its protection constitutes a priority for the Spanish Navy.
This operation began in Nigeria, an area of intense maritime activity where risks associated with piracy, armed robbery and other illicit activities persist. During its transit through the Gulf of Guinea, OPV Furor provided a deterrent presence, continuous surveillance and immediate response capability in the event of any incident. These actions were coordinated in accordance with the procedures established within the European CMP-GoG framework.
Such activities are directly aligned with the objectives of the deployment, which include increasing the coordinated naval presence of Spain and the European Union in the region, improving maritime domain awareness, supporting the security of European economic interests and strengthening cooperation with coastal states.
Furor operating in the waters of the Gulf of Guinea
OPV Furor, commanded by Commander Andrés García Estrada, is the sixth ship of the Meteoro class. It is specifically designed for maritime security, surveillance and the protection of merchant shipping. Its command and control capabilities, sensors and embarked assets enable it to operate autonomously and flexibly in large maritime areas such as the Gulf of Guinea.
This vast African maritime region represents an area of high geopolitical and economic value, essential for international trade and global energy supply. In this context, the presence of OPV Furor not only contributes to mitigating risks to navigation but also conveys a clear message of institutional support to Spanish companies operating in complex environments.
Through this operation, the Spanish Navy reaffirms its role as a key instrument of Spain’s foreign policy, contributing to regional stability and ensuring the effective protection of National Interest Vessels that sustain Spain’s trade and economic projection abroad.
