During its deployment as part of the Coordinated Maritime Presence, the Spanish Offshore Patrol Vessel reinforces maritime security along the African coastline
The Offshore Patrol Vessel “Furor” (P-46), as part of the first rotation of 2026 of the Coordinated Maritime Presence (CMP-GdG), has carried out visits to more than ten vessels of national affiliation or captained by Spaniards, engaged in fishing activities in West African waters and the Gulf of Guinea.
These meetings have made it possible to establish direct contact with the crews, verify their situation, learn about their needs and, at the same time, offer a point of support and reference for the Navy in West African waters.
These interactions enhance the sense of security among Spanish fishing vessels. They also facilitate the exchange of up-to-date information on the area's conditions and reinforce communication channels via the ENCOMAR system of the Navy's Maritime Action Operations and Surveillance Centre (COVAM) in case of any eventuality. Ultimately, the aim is to support and reinforce fishing operations, enabling them to be carried out with greater confidence by fostering mutual trust and knowledge.
Supporting the fishing fleet is one of the deployment's objectives, as these vessels often operate in areas where illegal activities such as piracy, trafficking and unreported fishing persist. The presence of the Spanish vessel acts as a deterrent in this context, supporting Spanish maritime interests and freedom of maritime trade in the region.
In addition to these specific tasks, the ship continues to carry out surveillance patrols and cooperate with coastal navies, as well as carrying out activities aimed at improving knowledge of the regional maritime environment. Such actions reinforce the CMP-GdG's operational capabilities, promoting regional stability and strengthening international cooperation to ultimately ensure a safe and stable maritime space.
"With all these actions, the Navy reaffirms its commitment to protecting national interests abroad and providing direct support to Spanish citizens who carry out their professional activities in complex scenarios. We are convinced that our presence in West Africa is a key element ensuring the security and freedom of navigation in an area of great strategic and economic importance for Spain," said Lieutenant Commander Ángel Garcia Estrada, who commands the ship.
Coordinated Maritime Presence Gulf of Guinea: participation of the “Furor”
The participation of the OPV “Furor”, with a crew of more than 70 sailors, in this European naval initiative reflects Spain's ongoing commitment to international security, cooperation with allied countries and the protection of maritime lines of communication.
This operation aims to enhance maritime security and to improve Maritime Domain Awareness by conducting joint patrols with West African coastal countries. It also supports the strengthening of these countries' military capabilities through training and instruction, both in port and at sea.
