The OPV Furor begins its deployment in the Gulf of Guinea within the framework of Coordinated Maritime Presences

January 16, 2026

This mission strengthens Spanish commitment to maritime security, international cooperation, and stability in West Africa.

Next Monday, the Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) Furor will begin its deployment on the coasts of West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea as part of the Coordinated Maritime Presence (CMP-GoG) operation. The CMP-GoG is a European Union initiative aimed at increasing maritime security and stability in this strategically key region.

The OPV Furor, headquartered in Cartagena and commanded by Lieutenant Commander Ángel García Estrada, is undertaking this mission after an intense period of preparation, training, and certification, during which internal maritime surveillance procedures have been reinforced and cooperation with other navies and international organisations has been consolidated. Thanks to this training, the vessel can operate effectively in a multinational environment and contribute to the fulfilment of the mission's objectives.

During the deployment, the Spanish vessel will carry out naval presence, surveillance and cooperation activities, which will contribute to improving awareness of the maritime environment and strengthening security in the shared maritime spaces, as well as enhancing coordination with European partners and maritime authorities in coastal countries.

Before commencing deployment, Commander García Estrada praised the effort of his crew. “The level of training and cohesion that we have achieved during our training period, combined with our enthusiasm and pride in representing Spain and the Navy, will propel us to accomplish the mission entrusted to us.”

He also stressed that security and well-being in Spain ‘begins many miles away from our shores, and we achieve this by guaranteeing freedom of navigation in our maritime areas of interest, on energy supply sea routes, as well as providing protection for the Spanish fishing fleet operating in the Gulf of Guinea’.

The participation of the 'Furor' in the CMP GoG

The OPV Furor's participation in the CMP GoG demonstrates Spain's ongoing commitment to international security and cooperation with allied countries, as well as its dedication to safeguarding maritime lines of communication.

This operation is an initiative of the European Union aimed at increasing maritime security and improving awareness of the maritime environment by conducting joint patrols in cooperation with the coastal countries of West Africa. It also supports the strengthening of these countries' military capabilities through training and instruction, both in port and at sea. Spain is actively involved in this operation as a reflection of its commitment to regional stability, international cooperation and the security of maritime areas of common interest.
