  • As part of this U.S.-led international initiative, the Spanish Navy and Special Operations Forces strengthen their cooperation to enhance security in West Africa

Service members from the Joint Special Operations Command (MCOE in Spanish) and the Special Naval Warfare Force (FGNE in Spanish), currently participating in the multinational exercise ‘Flintlock 2025’ led by the United States, have collaborated with the Spanish Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) ‘Relámpago’ (P-43) in the port of Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The day began with the reception of the multinational delegation aboard the Spanish vessel ‘Relámpago’, which is deployed in the Gulf of Guinea as part of the European Union’s Coordinated Maritime Presence. The delegation was welcomed by the ship’s crew, who facilitated embarkation for the commencement of planned activities.

Once on board, attendees took part in an introductory presentation on the capabilities of the OPV as a support platform for special operations in maritime environments. The crew highlighted key aspects including detection and combat systems, auxiliary boats, helicopter operations, and the vessel’s suitability for embarked units—especially in counter-piracy missions.

Operational Demonstration and Equipment Display

In addition, the Marine Infantry Operational Security Team (EOS in Spanish) from the Canary Islands Unit conducted a dynamic demonstration simulating a non-cooperative boarding of a suspect vessel. The exercise included fast boat maneuvers, boarding techniques, bridge securing procedures, and the neutralization of a hostile crew, all carried out under realistic conditions.

Following this, a static display of the equipment used in such operations was held in the vessel’s hangar. This included insertion systems, portable optronics, weapons, communications systems, and individual gear. During the display, participating military personnel exchanged insights and perspectives on technical matters and procedures, enhancing mutual understanding and camaraderie among the international forces.

Finally, the visit concluded with a guided tour of key areas of the OPV, including the bridge and the Combat Information Center (CIC).

‘Flintlock 2025’

‘Flintlock’ is one of the most significant international cooperation initiatives in the field of special operations, organized in Côte d’Ivoire by the U.S. Special Operations Command Africa (SOCAF). It brings together units from Europe, Africa, and North America. This year’s edition includes members of the African Partner Network (APN), with countries such as Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Tunisia, and Mauritania, as well as the Western Partner Network (WPN), comprising nations such as France, the Netherlands, and Italy.

The objective of ‘Flintlock 2025’ is to strengthen regional security cooperation and enhance interoperability among the participating U.S., European, and NATO special operations forces.
