  • Spanish Armed Forces took part in building and equipping the library in conjunction with the United States, Italy and Japan

Members of the 'Orion' Detachment -part of Operation Atalanta under the operational control of the Operations Command- collaborated in setting up a library in a school in Balbala, one of the most deprived neighbourhoods in Djibouti. The Spanish military took part in the construction of said library in conjunction with the United States, Italy, Japan and Djibouti.

Representatives from the four countries that carried out the project, as well as civil authorities from Djibouti, participated in the opening ceremony of the centre. The Spanish representation was led by Lieutenant Colonel Pedro Luis Pablo Asensio, head of the 'Orión' Detachment.

The Spanish contribution consisted of all the books that make up the library collection and part of the school material. During Lieutenant Colonel’s speech he stressed the importance of this type of project, "the fruit of the work and effort of four countries, with a direct, immediate and very positive impact on the population of Djibouti, especially in the children".

Projects like this are a clear indication of the commitment of the Spanish Armed Forces with their allies and Djibouti, not only to guarantee maritime security within Operation Atalanta, but also to contribute to improving the quality of life of the country that hosts the Spanish detachment.
