Change of command at Detachment 'Orion' in Djibouti

Djibouti (Somalia)
January 20, 2021
  • The commitment to provide support and surveillance to counter piracy is being mantained.

LTCol. Juan Carlos Dominguez Dorado has taken over the command of Detachment ‘Orión’ from his predecessor, LTCol. Antonio Garcia Masó within the facilities located at 188 Air Force Base in Djibouti, where the Spanish contingent has deployed its P-3 Orion airplane from the 11th wing.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the Spanish Armed Forces maintain its commitment to counter piracy, that affects Spanish and international vessels off the coast of Somalia, the Gulf of Aden and the Western Indian Ocean.

Detachment Orión’s P3 aircraft provides, within the framework of the European Operation Atalanta, maritime surveillance capacity over large areas. This capability contributes directly to the safety of maritime traffic. It also provides knowledge of the situation within the area of operations, providing rapid reaction capacity if the situation so requires.

Compliance with international commitment increases Spanish plausibility, whose troops have been have been continuously involved in this operation, being one of the EU member States with the greatest contributions in terms of assets and personnel since the beginning of the operation in 2008 to contribute to the security and stability of the Horn of Africa region.
