The Spanish contingent of the NASAMS Air Defence Unit, deployed in Latvia, provides this essential capability for planning, control, and coordination
The Spanish contingent of the NASAMS Air Defence Unit deployed in Latvia, provides a key capability through the SAM (Surface-to-Air Missile) Allocator, a fundamental tactical post in the planning, control, and coordination of air and missile defence. This role is responsible for planning, assigning, and harmonising the use of the medium-range air defence systems deployed under its direct control.
This task is carried out in close coordination with the host nation, Latvia, at the Lielvārde Control and Reporting Centre (CRC), where the SAM Allocator acts as a liaison officer with national authorities and the other nations participating in the collective air defence of NATO’s Eastern Flank, within the framework of NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD). Under these parameters, the main objective is to ensure an integrated, effective, and proportionate response to any air threat identified within the area of responsibility of the Spanish NASAMS Air Defence Unit.
In this eighth rotation of this NASAMS Air Defence Unit deployment, the SAM Allocator team consists of Captain Pedro Paños Hernández, from the 73rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment, and Sergeant Enrique de la Llave Arjonilla, from the 71st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment. Both of them are fully aware of the high level of responsibility inherent to their post, as well as the significant degree of technical specialisation and personal commitment required to fulfil their mission, which they undertake with great enthusiasm as part of the collective effort of the NASAMS Battery.
As the heads of the real-time command and control chain of the NASAMS Air Defence Unit, both emphasise that “the key to success lies in the coordinated work of all elements, as this allows the battery to operate with full effectiveness while remaining integrated within the Allied air defence system”.
This demanding mission, which requires long hours of constant vigilance, professionalism, and situational control, reinforces Spain’s presence and prestige within the Allied international mission in Latvia, while also demonstrating Spain’s firm commitment to European security and to the principles of solidarity and collective defence that underpin the Atlantic Alliance.
NASAMS Air Defence Unit in Operation IAMD F-E
The Spanish NASAMS Air Defence Unit contingent, commanded by Commander Jaime Caballero Jiménez, is deployed at Lielvārde Air Base (Latvia) and forms part of Operation IAMD F-E. This operation also currently includes the Tactical Air Detachment Tigru, with the radar of the Mobile Air Control Group (GRUMOCA) deployed in Romania, and the PATRIOT Air Defence Unit deployed in Adana (Turkey).
As Commander Caballero notes, the NASAMS system, equipped with medium-range AMRAAM launchers and the AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel radar, “provides high-precision air surveillance and interception capabilities and is fully integrated into NATO’s air defence network in the region”.
In June 2022, Spain deployed the NASAMS UDAA to Latvia. Since then, the continued presence of this artillery unit underscores our country's commitment to regional security and collective Atlantic defence.
