Spanish military personnel deployed in Support to Türkiye XXIII take part in the ‘Titan Dawn’ simulation exercise

Incirlik Air Base, Türkiye
January 19, 2026

This advanced international training activity aims to validate capabilities, procedures and systems in the event of a mass-casualty disaster scenario.

The Spanish contingent deployed in Operation NATO Support to Türkiye XXIII mission at Incirlik Air Base has participated in the international simulation exercise “Titan Dawn”. This challenging training exercise is designed to evaluate the level of training, command and control capabilities of the contingent, as well as the effectiveness of their response to various threats in complex, degraded and realistic scenarios.

During the exercise, a scenario involving a natural disaster with multiple casualties (Mass Casualty Incidents/MASCAL) was simulated. In this context, multiple incidents and operational scenarios occurred due to the degradation and loss of communications and power supply as well as other obstacles to providing healthcare for the numerous victims. This critical scenario required the coordinated implementation of emergency plans, as well as measures to sustain operations and protect the force.

Under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Luis Millán Burgos Sánchez, the execution of Titan Dawn tested the contingent's ability to maintain operational readiness under conditions of pressure and uncertainty. It demonstrated the soundness of training, the robustness of procedures, and the effectiveness of leadership at all levels. In this operational activity, rapid decision-making, cross-functional coordination, and the integration of capabilities were decisive in the successful resolution of the scenarios presented.

The exercise also involved military personnel from the United States and Türkiye, who interacted with Spanish forces. This has strengthened multinational interoperability and operational cohesion within the NATO framework. The integration of common resources, systems and procedures demonstrated the maturity of the allied model and the ability to operate jointly and effectively in the face of shared threats.

Beyond the strictly operational sphere, Titan Dawn has served to project the fundamental values of the Spanish military forces deployed in Türkiye: commitment to the mission, spirit of sacrifice, discipline, cohesion, leadership and dedication to service.

Through this exercise, the Spanish contingent AT XXIII reaffirms its contribution to Persistent Effort, consolidates its level of readiness, and demonstrates the army's ability to fully integrate into highly demanding multinational operations. In these operations, the army acts as a reliable and professional partner, committed to defending the Alliance's common interests.

NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence

The Patriot battery deployed in Türkiye belongs to NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence (NATO IAMD) operation, conducted within the framework of NATO’s Standing Defence Plan, Persistent Effort. This plan also integrates the NASAMS Surface-Based Air Defence Unit deployed in Latvia, the AN/TPS-43M radar of the OPV “Tigru” in Romania, and the air detachments conducting Air Policing missions, such as OPV “Stinga”, based in Iceland, and OPV “Vilkas”, deployed in Lithuania. All these deployments are conducted under the operational control of the Spanish Operations Command.

The Spanish AT XXIII unit in Türkiye, equipped with the Patriot air and missile defence system, constitutes a key element in the Alliance's eastern flank defence architecture. Its mission is framed within the concept of forward presence, credible deterrence and collective defence, contributing directly to the security of the Allies and regional stability in an area of high strategic interest.

Spain's participation in protecting the eastern flank of the allied territory demonstrates its commitment to the Alliance and is yet another example of our solidarity with our allies, with whom we share the values that underpin and protect democracy, freedom and global security.
