  • Operators of the Spanish Patriot battery receive air defence training, including aircraft identification and simulated live-fire exercises

The Spanish contingent deployed at Incirlik Air Base (Adana) as part of NATO’s Support to Türkiye Operation (A/T) is conducting regular collaborative training with the Turkish Air Force to enhance the skills of Patriot battery operators in air defence combat, focusing on aircraft identification and simulated live-fire scenarios.

During these joint drills, Turkish aircraft—such as the F-4E and F-16—simulate interceptions, combat engagements, and attacks on the area of responsibility assigned to the Spanish Patriot battery.

These joint activities significantly improve ground-to-air combat training and strengthen integration and interoperability with the armed forces of allied nations.

NATO IAMD – Operation ‘Persistent Effort’

The Spanish Patriot Unit deployed in Turkey forms part of NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD) operation, conducted under the Standing Defence Plan, Persistent Effort. This plan also includes the Tactical Air Detachment (DAT in Spanish) ‘Tigru’, the Mobile Air Control Group radar (GRUMOCA in Spanish) deployed in Romania, the NASAMS Air Defence Unit (UDAA in Spanish) in Latvia, and various temporary air detachments carrying out Air Policing missions.

Spain’s active contribution to the defence of NATO’s eastern flank highlights its firm commitment to the Alliance and stands as a further example of solidarity with our allies, with whom we share the values that underpin and defend democracy, freedom, and global security.
