Air Defence Unit in Latvia
Following the start of the Russian offensive on Ukraine in February 2022, the Alliance implemented Operation Persistent Effort.
To reinforce Latvia's air defence, SACEUR (Supreme Allied Commander Europe) requested in May 2022 the deployment of an air defence capability to protect Lielvarde Base. Spain complied with this request by deploying a UDAA (Air Defence Unit) of NASAMS missiles in June 2022.
In addition to its primary task of air defence of BA Lievarde, the UDAA actively collaborates with aircraft participating in the ‘Baltic Air Police’ - BAP operation.

- 10 July. UDAA NASAMS and a TK-23 aircraft provide security for the NATO summit in Lithuania.
