  • Military personnel from the Tactical Air Detachment 'Tigru' visited the facilities of the Mihail Kogalniceanu air base

An expedition of 15 military personnel from the Tactical Air Detachment (DAT) 'Tigru', commanded by its Force Commander, lieutenant colonel Rafael Conde Granado, has visited the Tactical Air Detachment (DAT) 'Paznic', which is deployed at the Romanian air base of Mikhail Kogalniceanu.

Upon their arrival at the base, the Spanish soldiers of the DAT “Tigru” were welcomed by the Force Commander of the DAT “Paznic”, Lieutenant Colonel Rafael Ichaso, who gave a brief presentation about the missions, infrastructure, resources and personnel of the detachment.

The military members of the DAT 'Tigru' also visited the facilities where the equipment used by the pilots for their missions, such as flight suits and night vision goggles (NVGs), are stored.

Afterwards, the expedition moved to the base's 'ECHO' platform, where the alarm barracks and the aircraft, pilots, mechanics and armorers on duty for quick reaction alert (QRA) flights are located. There they had the opportunity to witness a training scramble launch; with this activity, they appreciated the rapid departure of the pilots of the Spanish detachment and the take-off in a period of less than 15 minutes.

Afterwards, the 'Tigru' expedition went to the 'KILO' platform, where they were able to see the F-18 aircraft. Finally, they visited the communications center and the guard force, where they paid special attention to the anti-drone equipment (C-UAS).

These visits, in addition to fostering the coexistence of colleagues deployed abroad, play an important role in the integration of airspace surveillance forces on NATO's eastern flank.

 ‘Persistent Effort’ Operation

Both tactical air detachments are part of the “Persistent Effort” operation. In addition to this contribution to the Air Police missions, Spain contributes to this mission with the AN/TPS-43M radar deployed in Romania, two UDAA NASAMS in Latvia and Estonia, as well as the Patriot battery in Turkey.

All in all, Spain's participation in the protection of the eastern flank of allied territory is proof of Spain's commitment to the Alliance and another example of solidarity with our allies, with whom we share the values that sustain and protect democracy, freedom and international security.
