Submarine ‘Tramontana’ stopover at Cagliari port

Cagliari, Italy
November 27, 2020
  • The submarine, involved in Operation 'Sea Guardian', docks in the Italian port for logistical reasons and to give some rest to the crew

After a few weeks of navigation integrated into Operation 'Sea Guardian', the submarine ‘Tramontana’ headed for the Italian island of Sardinia, where it arrived for a logistical stopover. This stopover is used to replenish the ship with supplies and to undertake the maintenance that allows it to continue sailing until the completion of the deployment.

During the first three weeks of patrol, the submarine carried out maritime surveillance tasks framed in the allied operation against terrorism and other threats projected from the sea. In addition, the weather allowed various individual training exercises to be carried out.

After the brief logistical stop, the submarine will set sail again to continue its mission in Mediterranean waters, where it will remain on patrol with the usual stealth and discretion until the end of the deployment, scheduled for mid-December.

Due to the current situation caused by the pandemic, it is necessary to take measures to guarantee both the safety against COVID19 of the personnel on board and the fulfilment of the mission. For this reason, the 64 men and women of the crew remain in the submarine and it will not be possible to visit the city of Cagliari, being necessary to carry out isolation on the dock, which will be adequate as far as possible to facilitate the rest of the personnel

The Submarine ‘Tramontana’ accumulates more than 35 years of service but continues to effectively carry out all the missions entrusted to it. Participating in this mission shows Spain's commitment to NATO.
