  •  This unit ensures security against aerial and drone threats, with integrated capabilities and high operational availability.

The Air Defense Unit (UDAA) of the Multinational Brigade Task Force Slovakia (MN BDE TF SVK) is responsible for providing protection against threats from the airspace. Its primary mission is to neutralize very low-altitude threats, including aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

This unit is part of NATO's air defense architecture, ensuring the integration of national and allied capabilities under a common command and control framework. This integration allows for continuous airspace surveillance, guaranteeing the detection, identification, and immediate response to any potential threat.

The Anti-Aircraft Artillery Unit (UDAA)—created by the 2nd Field Artillery Group of the Spanish Legion, based in Almería, and reinforced with specialized personnel from the Anti-Aircraft Artillery Command (MAAA)—is equipped with a MISTRAL missile battery, an air defense system, and the CROW Counter-UAS system, specifically designed for the detection, classification, and neutralization of UAS in the tactical environment. The combination of these two systems provides layered and flexible coverage, adapted to the characteristics of the operational scenario.

Leading the unit is Captain José Peláez López, who emphasized that “air defense in this environment requires constant vigilance, a high level of technical readiness, and full integration with other allied systems, as the aerial threat—particularly that posed by UAS—demands a rapid, precise, and coordinated response.” He also noted that the unit maintains a high level of training to ensure its ability to respond in any circumstance.

The UDAA’s contribution not only strengthens the security of deployed forces but also projects an image of capability, commitment, and leadership within the multinational structure.<=“”>

Spanish Leadership of the NATO Brigade in Slovakia

On January 20, 2024, the Spanish Armed Forces began the phased deployment of personnel and capabilities to Slovakia to contribute to the deterrence and defense capabilities required by the Alliance. Currently, Spain leads the formation of the NATO Multinational Brigade and maintains a Multinational Task Force permanently deployed in the town of Lest.

On July 1, 2024, Spain assumed leadership of the “Multinational Brigade Task Force Slovakia.” Slovakia, Slovenia, Portugal, and the Czech Republic joined this NATO effort on allied territory in Eastern Europe; under Spanish leadership, they complete the Task Force’s capabilities.

This deployment of forces to support and reinforce NATO’s forward presence on the eastern flank underscores Spain’s—and its Armed Forces’—firm commitment to our allies and our country’s resolute contribution to the Alliance’s deterrence efforts in Eastern Europe.
