  • Prometheus represents a technological milestone since it allows manufacturing spare parts on site, which considerably reduces the economic cost, delivery times and the external supply chain dependence

The Prometheus additive manufacturing team, operated by military members of the Spanish National Support Element (NSE) of the 41st Logistics Support Group of Zaragoza, is developing experimental-oriented logistics activities within the framework of the NATO Multinational Brigade Task Force of Slovakia (MN BDE TF SVK), at the Košová Camp.

The Prometheus system is a technological breakthrough that is actually solving logistics issues, as well as to shorten restoration times for the equipment operativity. In the area of operations, this initiative has been promoted thanks to the Spanish Army Logistic Support Command (MALE in Spanish), which contributes to the system through the maintenance chain.

Therefore, Prometheus represents a technological milestone, enabling the manufacture of Class IX repair parts and components (parts and spare parts for the maintenance and repairing of military equipment) on the ground, which considerably reduces economic costs, delivery times and the dependence on external logistic supply chains.

The work process ranges from digital design of the part and the polymer rapid prototyping production, to the final production in high impact resistant plastics or even metal materials, depending on operational demands. This capability grants great flexibility standards to provide rapid responses to critical needs on the ground, where the ultimate objective is always to recover materials in the shortest possible time.

Among the most relevant parts developed are the components for weapon system, such as rail systems for HK rifles and MG-4 machine guns, AG-36 grenade launcher, supplies for combat vehicles, night vision and monocular components, as well as specific parts for FPV drones, which are of special relevance in the NATO’s Multinational Brigade operational experimentation.

The integration of Prometheus in the MN BDE TF SVK enhances logistical autonomy, guarantees the availability of essential assets and enables a continuous improvement of in-service materials. Thus, readiness, sustainability and effectiveness of the multinational force in its mission accomplishment of deterrence and defence on the NATO’s Eastern Flank are reinforced.

Spain has the command of MN BDE TF SVK as the Framework Nation, which entails the responsibility of providing key capabilities, operational leadership and technological innovation for the benefit of all Allies. In this context, the contribution of pioneering systems such as Prometheus reflects Spain’s commitment to modernising logistics resources and procedures, as well as providing comprehensive support to deployed troops. At the same time, the cohesion of the Multinational Brigade is strengthened to ensure the protection of NATO's eastern flank, in close cooperation with Slovakia, the host nation for the deployment.

Spain’s participation in Slovakia

On 20th January 2024, the Spanish Armed Forces began the gradual deployment of military personnel and capabilities in Slovakia. Spain is currently leading the formation of the MN BDE TF SVK and maintains a Multinational Battlegroup permanently deployed in the town of Lešť.

Slovakia, Slovenia, Portugal and the Czech Republic have joined NATO's efforts in this country. Under the Spanish command, they complete the operational capabilities of the MN BDE TF SVK. In this context, Spain provides the largest number of forces and capabilities to this mission, demonstrating that it is a responsible partner and Ally, fully committed to the NATO’s defence objectives and deterrence efforts in Eastern Europe.
