  • The NATO Multinational Battle Group has developed an exercise focused on how to enhance interoperability of the different assets

The exercise Paladin Forge has been conducted in Ādaži manoeuvre field and its main objective is to train the Battle Group, formed by twelve nations, as a cohesive and effective combat unit.

This unit is made up of a Spanish mechanised tactical subgroup with battle tanks, Pizarro’s infantry fighting vehicles and a wide range of other capabilities, a Canadian armoured company with Leopards, another Polish tank company with PT-91, an Italian company with Ariete and Dardo vehicles, the Spanish Engineer Unit, a multinational company integrated by teams and multinational instructors, such as the Albanian explosive ordnance disposal team or a reconnaissance platoon of northern Macedonian Slovenes and Montenegrins, and last but not least, a Logistics Support Group, essential for the sustainment during this Battle Group’s deployment.

It is commanded by the Canadian Lieutenant Colonel Jean Françoise Labonté and his second-in-command, the Spanish Deputy Commander Francisco Javier Naranjo. This major multinational staff is also integrated by several Spanish members.

The exercise Paladin Forge has been developed in two parts. The first corresponds to planning and the second to execution. The main objective was to improve the interoperability of all capabilities, and to provide instruction and training in all aspects related to command and control.

It is the first exercise of this entity that performs the Battle Group and represents a challenge due to the great variety of assets and doctrines that exist within it. The preparation and capabilities of our military staff as well as that of our allies makes it possible to efficiently use all the assets at their reach, which allows it to be a well-prepared and cohesive unit in order to provide a rapid, effective, powerful and decisive response to a potential threat on the eastern flank of Europe.
