Spanish specialists were immediately deployed to assess the situation while ensuring area security
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team of BRILIB XLIV, deployed under the UNIFIL mission, neutralised several items of unexploded ordnance (UXO) in an area regularly used by residents of the Lebanese town of Qabrikha, in southern Lebanon.
Upon receiving the alert, Spanish EOD specialists activated established procedures and were immediately deployed to assess the situation, while ensuring the safety and security of the area.
In close coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), the national authorities responsible for unexploded ordnance, a security perimeter was established and a technical reconnaissance was conducted to identify the type of munitions and determine the most appropriate method for their neutralisation
The clearance of explosive remnants of war, originating from both past and recent conflicts, is an essential task to ensure a safer environment and to reduce the risks that continue to affect local communities. This operation highlights UNIFIL’s commitment to the safety, security and well-being of the population in southern Lebanon, in accordance with the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006).
Following the completion of the operation, municipal authorities and local residents were informed of the removal of the explosive devices. Risk awareness messages were also reinforced, underlining the importance of early reporting of any suspicious findings. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of BRILIB XLIV and the LAF, the population of Qabrikha can continue their daily activities in a safer environment.
Spain in UNIFIL
The Spanish Armed Forces have been deployed in Lebanon since September 2006. The main Spanish contingent is based at Miguel de Cervantes Base, near the town of Marjayoun, where the Headquarters of UNIFIL Sector East, led by Spain, is located. Spanish personnel are also deployed at the UNIFIL Mission Headquarters in Naqoura.
Currently, approximately 650 Spanish service members are deployed under UNIFIL, with the mission of ensuring compliance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, in a highly volatile security environment, despite the peace agreement signed between Israel and Lebanon
Spain’s participation in the United Nations mission in Lebanon has been consolidated over the years as a firm demonstration of its commitment to peace, security and stability in the region. In addition to military tasks, the Spanish contingent carries out numerous civil-military cooperation activities, strengthening ties with the local population.
