The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team, belonging to the Lebanon XLIV Brigade (BRILIB) Engineering Unit, assisted a motorcyclist who had been involved in an accident on his way back to base after a reconnaissance mission. Faced with this incident, Sergeant Carlos Gago, head of the EOD team, did not hesitate to stop the convoy and assist the injured rider, who turned out to be an off-duty soldier from the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF).
While the local emergency services arrived, the head of the Advanced Life Support Team (SVA) of the Medical Unit, Medical Lieutenant Francisco Ruiz Reyes, provided first aid to the victim, who had suffered head injuries and possibly a broken leg. After the civilian ambulance arrived, the injured man was loaded with the help of the Spanish medical team, who transferred him to a local hospital, where he is now in a stable condition.
With this assistance, the Spanish armed forces once again clearly demonstrate their constant spirit of service, as well as the more human side and values they show every day in the interests of civilian safety. Preparation and training are essential, not only for the execution of their missions, but also to act with the necessary knowledge whenever required.
Spain in UNIFIL
The Spanish Armed Forces deployed to Lebanon in September 2006. The bulk of the Spanish contingent is stationed at the Miguel de Cervantes base, near the town of Marjayoun, where the headquarters of the Eastern Sector of UNIFIL, commanded by Spain. There are also Spanish troops at the mission headquarters in Naqoura.
Currently, some 650 Spanish military personnel are deployed in UNIFIL, with the aim of ensuring compliance with United Nations Resolution 1701, in a very unstable security situation, despite the peace agreement signed between Israel and Lebanon.
Spain's participation in the United Nations mission in Lebanon has been consolidated over the years as a firm demonstration of its commitment to peace, security, and well-being in the region. In addition to its military duties, the Spanish contingent has carried out numerous civil-military cooperation activities, strengthening ties with the local population.
