  • Over the past year, it has provided advice on planning, assistance, and support to trainers of Iraqi operations

The Spanish Armed Forces have taken over from the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) as part of the International Coalition against Daesh. This handover ensures Spain's continued support for the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) in its efforts to consolidate security and prevent the resurgence of terrorist cells in the country.

Over the past year, the SOTG has participated in various operations alongside CTS units, providing advice on planning, assistance, and support for trainers during missions. In this way, the Spanish unit has acted as a direct link between the CTS and the Coalition, facilitating access to air support, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), and other special operations resources.

For their part, Iraqi CTS authorities have repeatedly expressed their appreciation for the work carried out by Spanish teams, which has been fundamental in strengthening their operational capabilities.

In addition to providing operational advice, SOTG XXIII will continue to train CTS units in key areas, including information exploitation, combat training, and the reinforcement of specific capabilities, such as K9 canine teams. Training takes place within Iraqi bases, which facilitates daily cooperation and reduces the logistical needs of Spanish forces. As an example, Iraqi canine units use commands in Spanish, reflecting the degree of implementation and continuity of the work of the Spanish Armed Forces.

All in all, thanks to the sustained support of the Coalition and joint efforts, the CTS currently maintains the capacity to ensure stability throughout Iraqi territory.
