NATO SEA GUARDIAN

NATO Maritime Operation in the Mediterranean

The Sea Guardian Mission is a maritime security operation focused on using maritime situational awareness to dissuade and fight against terrorism and other threats.

This Operation aims to develop a strong maritime situational awareness by combining sensor and non-sensor based networks, with a reliable exchange of information and connectivity between the partners and organisms related to the maritime environment.

The Operation Sea Guardian has three tasks, which are already laid out in the NATO Maritime Security Operations Concept:

  • Maritime support to combat terrorism
  • Support to maritime situational awareness
  • Contribution to the development of maritime security regional abilities

Additionally, and under approval by the North Atlantic Council, the 4 maritime security permanent tasks left can also be executed:

  • Maintenance of freedom of navigation
  • Maritime interdiction
  • Fight against the proliferation of weapons of maritime destruction
  • Protection of critical infrastructures

The mission´s area of operations is the same as that of Operation Active Endeavour. It is restricted to the international waters in the Mediterranean Sea and to waters near the Strait of Gibraltar.

By means of approval from the Council of Ministers, Spain contributes to Operation Sea Guardian with the following units:

  • An average of 4 MPA (Maritime Patrol Aircraft) departures a month
  • A submarine in two periods of 45 days, once per semester.
  • A patrol boat ready to set sail 48 hours upon request
  • A command ship carrying a Joint Chief of Staff available to lead
  • Permanent diplomatic clearance for the Cartagena and Rota bases

In addition, support is also offered to naval units crossing the Sea Guardian operations area.

In July 2015, the North Atlantic Council (NAC) decided to modify the Operation Active Endeavour (OAE) to Operation “No Article V” based on networks, instead of platforms (units) as OAE did.

After finishing Operation Active Endeavour, on 9th November 2016, Operation Sea Guardian (OSG) was activated.
